Name:Roman to medieval metal objects

Summary

Metal detecting from 1996 to 1998 recovered a number of objects from the Roman to medieval period. This includes a fragment of a thickish copper alloy sheet, with one silver surface and decorated with two spirals of a running spiral design, which was probably once enamelled. It has been identified as perhaps part of a hanging bowl escutcheon with a central aperture, and dates to the 7th century.

February 1997. Metal detector find.
Fragment thickish bronze sheet, curving but partly damaged outer edge, curving inner edge. One surface silver and decorated with two spirals, of a running spiral design, probably once enamelled. Perhaps part of a hanging bowl escutcheon with central aperture. Early Saxon/Middle Saxon 7th century.
