Summary

Extensive metal detecting at this location from 1994 to 2005 retrieved a range of multi period metal objects. The collection included an unusual Middle Saxon strap end, an early post medieval sword-belt, prehistoric pot boilers and flints and a Roman finger ring.

Full description

vNovember/December 1994. Metal detector finds.
At location [1]. 9th century strap end very fine. Fan shaped field with leaf, field below divided into four, upper two with S-shaped leaves, lower two with animals. Ribbed borders (and in centre), neat animal head terminal (S1).
At location [2]. Weird! Unusual Middle Saxon strap end, three rivet holes at top, tongue shaped with border of eight grooved leaves. Inner field is silvered, and decorated?
At location [3]. Early post medieval belt mount (part of sword belt set) with cut out and scalloped edges with circular terminal and one iron rivet.

Early post medieval sword-belt fitting with double suspension loop and moulded (transverse) decoration on attachment plate, two rivet holes.
18th century tanged buckle.

1996. Metal detector finds.
At location [4]. Later medieval dagger guard (quillon type) with terminal knobs, slightly drooping as London Museums Medieval Corpus Fig.8, No.1. Solder sears of applied ?silver sheet and similar on sides.
At location [5]. Strap end and ?closure/lock for a book? ?Post medieval.
At location [6]. Weight (4.36gm). Cube (8mm cubed) with faceted corners. 6 large faces each with 6 ring-and-dot within engraved line around edge. Small facets each (8) with 1 ring-and-dot. Medieval.

Early post medieval 16th century double loop (trapezoidal) buckle frame - white metal coating.

1997. Metal detecting.
At location [7] and location [8] (not differentiated).
Medieval circular bronze buckle with central bar. Pin intact. Late 14th - late 15th century.
Post medieval complete bronze double-looped buckle. Floral decoration on outside edge of loop. 16th - 17th century.
NB Grid references of these and previous finds show that this 'site' is larger than shown on 1:10,000 NHER map.
