Summary

Extensive metal detecting at this location from 1993-2005 retrieved a number of metal artefacts dating to a variety of periods. The finest objects recovered were a beautiful Roman escutcheon for a handle, a Middle Saxon ansate brooch and a medieval pilgrim badge showing the annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel with the Virgin Mary.

Full description

1993. Metal detector find.
Lovely! Roman escutcheon for handle, two leaf-shaped panels, with transverse mouldings between and a moulded looped at top and circular attachment plate.

1994. Metal detector find.
Medieval strap end with a forked spacer plate with cast acorn terminal. Front decorated with zig-zag row of rocker-arm ornament.

1995. Metal detector finds.
Middle Saxon ansate brooch with knobbed bow, and wedge shaped terminals with lobed edges, and engraved lines with a cross on central lobe. Double lug and catch plate on reverse, (S2).
Medieval harness stud, unusual star-shaped attachment plate (four points with knop terminal). Folded H-shaped lug for attachment of pendant. (Cross pin missing). Traces of gilding.
Medieval lead disc with broken loop on reverse and central rib. Two fragments in low relief with a lily pot in centre. This shows Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel with Virgin Mary. Walsingham (probably) pilgrim badge.
Post medieval harness mounts, decoration gilt.

1997. Metal detector find.
17th century+ gilded bronze signet ring. D-section hoop with stamped 'rope twist' decoration, flaring grooved shoulders, sub-circular bezel with wreath or ears of corn. Probably early post medieval.
