Name:Fine medieval finger ring and vessel escutcheon, multi-period metal objects and coins

Summary

Metal-detecting here in 1990 recovered a beautiful medieval silver finger ring and a superb cast bronze vessel handle escutcheon in the form of female head. The ring had a bezel in the form of gilded openwork crown above clasped hands. Subsequent metal-detecting in the same area during 2005-06 retrieved Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins along with a medieval coin weight, medieval seal matrix, post-medieval animal bell and post-medieval cloth seal. Metal-detecting in 2010 recovered a medieval gilt harness stud and a post-medieval silver bar mount.

October 1990. Found with metal detector. [1].

Lovely 15th century silver finger ring. Bezel in form of gilded openwork crown above clasped hands. Incomplete inscription on hoop AVE MA and beginning of next letter. Bezel has been joined to hoop and bezel is upside down. Either ring has been reduced in size or parts of two rings cannibalised. See for comparison Oman, British Rings, 1974, plate 55 no. H, for similar bezel. Photographed. In general area of other two finds. Medieval bronze dagger chape; decorated with zone of double lines at top and bottom.

Lovely unusually large cast bronze vessel handle escutcheon with deep socket in back, in form of female head. Weight 285.75g. Se for comparison example from Carrow Abbey (site 296N) excavated by M. Atkin (Norwich Survey) in NCM.
