Summary

Metal detecting here during the period 1989-91 recovered a range of archaeological artefacts. Finds of note included a silver medieval figure of Christ crucified, post medieval rumbler bells, an Early Saxon brooch, a Norwich farthing token dating to 1667 and a post medieval bronze coin weight stamped with two fleur-de-lys and the letters ‘IS’ in centre.

Full description

Spring 1989. Metal detector survey and observation of footings for new housing, on land formerly part of school grounds on north side of churchyard.
Medieval pottery including Andenne Ware sherd, and other finds.
Early Saxon brooch, (S2).
Worked flint.
Ditch seen in section.

Medieval gilt bronze brooch or buckle pin with moulded collar. Polaroid taken.

James I twopence (Seaby 2659).
Two bronze rumbler bells.
William and Mary jetton (1689-1694) by Gottlieb Lauffer.
Probable medieval hammered coin, very worn, that has been stamped with various letters in 19th/20th century RD,HW,D,DEN etc.
Bronze ?coin weight stamped with two fleur-de-lys and IS in centre.
