Name:Roman ditch and multi-period finds

Summary

Metal detecting and casual finds in the late 1980s recovered a large number of Roman, Saxon, medieval and post medieval coins and metal objects. A watching brief undertaken by NAU in 1993 recorded the presence of ditches containing Roman pottery sherds, and a post medieval pit containing contemporary pottery sherds and objects.

Nineteen coins 3rd to 4th century

Colchester Derivative rear hook, ends of wings folded over to hold axis rod, mid-late 1st century (S1)
Late Saxon circular hooked tag, hook broken off, two attachment holes, no decoration.
Possible Late Saxon buckle and plate with elaborate moulded frame, plate decorated with dot-in-circle (S1).
Medieval stirrup shaped hasp (S1).
Early post medieval white metal plated buckle assymetric double looped. Bronze loop from window fastener or handle?
Silver coin probably post medieval, Scottish Turner Charles I 1625-49 obverse showing crowned CR, reverse showing Thistle. Bronze coin European?
Two Hans Krauwinckel jettons.
This material is likely to have been found over a larger area than originally marked on the NCM map.

Late Upper Palaeolithic flint long blade found in garden of Yew Tree Court.
Now recorded seperately as NHER 59942.
