Name:Worked flints, Iron Age to post medieval objects

Summary

Fieldwalking in 1987 noted a general scatter of Iron Age, Roman and medieval pottery fragments and a piece of medieval roof tile. Metal detecting between 1998 and 2004 recovered a range of objects, including a Roman cosmetic mortar, two Middle Saxon pins, a Late Saxon stirrup strap mount, a very elaborate medieval horse harness pendant and a medieval jetton.

Full description

6 March 1987. Former allotments southeast of [1]. Fenland fieldwalking, weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1 general scatter odd Iron Age? And medieval sherds and occasional flint WGY BE. Also medieval roof tile.
Context 2 at [3] limited concentration of Iron Age? pottery and few burnt pebbles. Also quite a few fragments of cinder (?not associated) and few medieval sherds. On south side island but below and north of crest. 29m maximum diameter at 10.1m OD. WGY 17. Finds NCM.

Context 3 at [2]; few sherds of Iron Age? Pottery spread over area of about 15m diameter, not apparently continuous with Context 2.
