Name:Sites of Middle Saxon and medieval settlements and multi-period finds

Summary

This is the site of a Middle Saxon settlement and two medieval settlements revealed during fieldwalking. Prehistoric flints and fragments of Middle Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery and post medieval clay pipes have been found on the site.

Full description

Winter 1984 to 1985. Hales sites 155-7. Fieldwalking low grown cereal, just shot good conditions.
Context 1 general scatter (157) 4 worked flints.
1 base 3 sherds Ipswich pimply.
1 rim 1 sherd Ipswich sandy.
1 rim jar probably Middle Saxon local sandy.
40 medieval unglazed.
2 late medieval/early post medieval.
1 16th century green-glazed base.
10 glazed red earthenware.
Context 2 at 3765 9910 (155). Impressive concentration.
73 medieval unglazed, 8 medieval glazed including 2 odd jug rims oxydised and not actually glazed.
2 late medieval/early post medieval.
5 glazed red earthenware.
1 worked flint.
Context 3 at 3754 9895 (158).
16 medieval unglazed.
1 whitish fabric glazed medieval import.
13 late medieval/early post medieval.
19 glazed red earthenware.
6 post medieval stoneware.
3 clay pipes.

(S1) identifies three sites recorded under this number.
Site 155 is the site of a medieval settlement which had disappeared by the post medieval (possibly shifting to the site of nearby Plumer's Farm).
Site 156 is the site of a medieval settlement, and together with Site 155 represents expansion into areas not exploited since the Middle Saxon period.
Site 157 is the site of a probable Middle Saxon settlement, but there is no evidence for later occupation.
