Full description

15 March 1984. Fenland Fieldwalking. Field of winter wheat and weathered plough soil.
Context 1: General scatter medieval sherds. Includes eleven Late Saxon sherds.
Context 2: More condensed scatter centred on 5009 1697 but not concentration. Includes eight Late Saxon sherds.
Context 3: at [1]. Concentration medieval pottery 30 x 20m maximum sparse to moderate; post medieval pot sparse, so animal bone and shell. Fired clay moderate; quantities of small sandstone fragments (tiles?). Area divided into two by unploughed strip, on top and north side of roddon.
Context 4: at [2]. Concentration medieval pot but quite diffuse 26 x 7m. Sparse shell and bone, abundant post medieval debris including fired clay and sandstone fragments. On top roddon. Some of the material from Context 4 has been reidentified as medieval pottery, and a whetstone.
Context 5: at [3]. Concentration of sparse to moderate medieval pot 20 x 18m post medieval pot sparse; bone and shell sparse to moderate. Fired clay and sandstone fragment same; glass moderate. On north side rodham, though may spread over top where track disguises soil. Considerable quantity of Late Saxon sherds - archive.
Context 6: at [4]. Concentration medieval pot, moderate, 31 x 21m minimum (may run under boundaries to southwest and southeast). Shell and bone sparses; post medieval material sparse except on north edge where more frequent. On top roddon under rows of daffodils.
