Full description

1 February 1984. Fenland fieldwalking. Field of well-weathered plough soil but very damp.
Context 1: sparse scatter Roman sherds in east side field. (S1).
Context 2: concentration at 5010 1781. Sherds of Roman pottery generally within 25m of roadside dyke. Also odd bits of fired clay and slag but also a fair amount of post medieval material. Seems likely that the dyke has cut through a buried Roman level and material has been spread over field. But see also Context 3 70m x 25m. Some of the material form Context 2 has been reidentified as medieval pottery. (S2).
Context 3: at 5016 1799. Moderate scatter Roman pottery over relatively small area. Also a fair amount of post medieval material so odd bits of slag and fair amount fired clay could be associated with that. No sign that sits on a roddon although landscape does undulate slightly. Around 35m x 25m. (S3).
R. Silvester (NAU), 2 February 1984.

1 February. Well-weathered plough soil. Additional to Context 1 (general scatter).
Over all of the three conjoined fields forming a triangular shape, fair amount medieval pot and some Roman material.

6 February.
Further scatter of Roman material including Samian ware north of Context 3 but part of Context 1.
For full details of wares, flint types etc see Fenland Folders. (S4).
R. Silvester (NAU), 7 February 1984.
