Summary

Metal detecting at this location in 1982, 1988 and 2003 recovered a range of multi period metal objects. Noteworthy finds included a Roman Colchester brooch, a medieval penny of Edward III and a post medieval tobacco tamper made from copper alloy. Subsequent metal-detecting in 2011 recovered a post-medieval coin.

Full description

Late 1982. Over surface of field south of church. Found while metal detecting.
Context 1. At very edge of field, north side, opposite church door. One-piece bronze Colchester brooch.
Context 2. Spread over field in general. Edward III silver penny. Medieval unglazed body sherd. Small scrap of melted bronze scrap. Brooch retained by finder, rest held by NCM.

Copper alloy tobacco tamper with ring and one of two seal-matrices surviving, with two crossed arrows through heart surmounted by a crown. 16th century. See (S1) for comparison.
