Full description

20 January 1983. Fenland fieldwalking.
Context 1.
Odd sherds of medieval pottery scattered over field. Also four Late Saxon.
Possibly derived from Context 4.

Context 2 at [1]. Latter accounts for soil discolouration. Area of about 15m west-to-east and 6m north-to-south minimum. Too much modern to measure. 4.6m (15ft) OD.
Small scatter medieval pottery on small roddon. Also two Late Saxon sherds. Animal bone, fired clay and slag also about.
Much modern debris as well.

Context 3 at [2].
Spread medieval pottery on roddon. Also four Late Saxon.
Also fired clay and animal bone.
No obvious soil discolouration and pottery not abundant though this could be due to conditions.
R. Silvester (NAU) January 1983.

Context 4 at [3]. However most pottery seems to be beyond limits of pond. About 15m diameter x 2.7m (9ft) OD.
Small patch medieval pottery.
No bone or other debris.
Not on apparent roddon.
No soil discolouration.
Note - possible pond on 6in Ordnance Survey filled in.
Conceivably material introduced at that time.
