In 1982 pieces of iron slag were recovered from the ground surface at this location. It is possible these fragments of metal working debris relate to a Roman furnace.

Full description

30 November 1982.
Iron slag.
Identified by D. Smith (NCM, Natural History).

3 December 1982. Site visit by D. Edwards (NAU).
Material identified was found in/on bank on west side of garden and unstratified.
Large fragment seen, indicating furnace 45cm in diameter. Other fragments have been given away by finder in past.
No associated finds. Sample now held by NCM.
