Summary

A World War Two Type 22 pillbox survives as an extant structure. It has been visited on the ground and is also visible on aerial photographs. It appears to have formed part of the outer defences of a World War Two camp and possible defensive site 120m to its north (NHER 49672), the exact function of which is not known.

Full description

THE WORLD WAR TWO MILITARY CAMP (CONCRETE ROADS AND BUILDINGS) AND POSSIBLE SEARCHLIGHT BATTERY DESCRIBED BELOW ARE NOW RECORDED AS NHER 49672.

Pill box.
Polygonal, brick clad.
First noted by Pillbox Survey.
Grid reference by E. Rose (NAU), 28 April 1982.

October 1945 RAF air photograph (S1) shows concrete roads (still partly shown on Ordnance Survey maps) with building complex on north and east of field. Cropmark/parchmarks in grass show circular structures commensurate with a searchlight battery.

NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TM 3949 9688 to TM 3947 9675.

The World War Two Type 22 pillbox described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S2)-(S3), centred at TM 3947 9675. It is also depicted by modern Ordnance Survey 1:2500 mapping. The other World War Two military features described above are now recorded as NHER 49672.
