Summary

Between 1980 and 1982 a number of finds were recovered from this section of the river bank, including a Palaeolithic retouched flint flake, an undatable prehistoric retouched flint flake, a ?prehistoric burnt flint and a Bronze Age/Iron Age pottery sherd. A layer of burnt material (potentially waste from nearby lime kilns) was also observed.

Full description

24 May 1980. Field Observation and Stray Find.
Found by E. Rose (NAU) on sandy beach exposed by collapse of river bank:
1 ?prehistoric burnt flint 'pot boiler'.

NB. There is a layer of burnt material immediately above natural in the bank, but this appears to be of recent date composed of clinker from the lime kilns (see the large blocks of slag in river nearby).

May 1980. Stray Find.
Finds recovered by [1] on bank of River Yare, just east of Whitlingham Lane picnic area. These found 8" [20cm] down in river bank, above a thin band of cindery material (bank badly disturbed):
1 prehistoric retouched flint flake.
1 Bronze Age/Iron Age pottery sherd. Base of jar in heavily flint-gritted fabric of generalised BA/IA type.
These finds were subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1981.424).
