Full description
'There must have been a Saxon church on the site of the present one... evidence of burials of that period has been found in the vicarage garden'.
From notes on history of Upton church displayed in building; not printed very long ago.
Vicar explains that notes were taken from a privately printed history of Upton by Rev. P. Oakley Hill in 1891; p.98 - 'the recent discovery of ancient pottery in the vicarage garden, having the appearance of Anglo- Saxon funerary urns (in fragments), suggests the possibility of the site having been an Anglo-Saxon burial ground a thousand years ago'.
