Community Archaeology in King's Lynn

Monday, 09 July 2012

The Norfolk Historic Environment Service’s Community Archaeology team have recently been working with members of the West Norfolk and King’s Lynn Archaeological Society to record the remains of a Second World War air raid shelter in Kettlewell Gardens, King’s Lynn. The public shelter was one of many built in the town during the war, but while some shelters were subsequently demolished, this proved to be too difficult in Kettlewell Gardens and the shelter was simply bricked up instead.

During the course of the two-day survey the team produced a series of drawings and photographs of the building. They also interviewed several local residents who shared their memories of using and playing in the shelter during the war. The results of the Kettlewell survey will be added to the HER in due course.
