Full description

'Pits' on Kelling Heath.
See (S1).
R.R. Clarke (NCM).

On (S1) R.R. Clarke (NCM) notes 'Pits - age uncertain - quarries for ferruginous gravel for iron working?'

(S2) has 'pits' marked here and at NHER 6250 as antiquities.
It is unlikely the grid reference is meant to be accurate; the words seem generally to refer to Muckleburgh Hill and Fox Hill, both of which are continuations of Kelling Heath.
E. Rose (NAU), 28 October 1985.

October 2003. Norfolk NMP.
No definite traces of pits relating to this site were mapped during the NMP. Pits were mapped within the general vicinity (NHER 38369) although these all appeared to be military in origin. On Hunting Survey photographs from 1969 (S3) some pits are visible within the location indicated in the previous record, however, due to the massive amount of post-war activity on the hill, it is hard to distinguish any definitely earlier features. These pits cover an area approximately 50m by 40m, centred on TG 1027 4299.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 November 2003.
