Welcome to the Norfolk Heritage Explorer
This website offers a unique opportunity to access an abridged version of the Norfolk Historic Environment Record database online.
The Norfolk HER is the definitive database of the county's archaeological sites and historic buildings. It contains over 60,000 records describing the archaeology of Norfolk from the earliest evidence for human occupation from 750,000 BC up to the present day.
The website is updated periodically throughout the year, so add us to your favourites and follow us on Twitter.
Please note that whilst we are combating the spread of COVID-19 throughout the UK our staff members are continuing to work from home and therefore we are able to maintain provision of the majority of our services, including HER Searches (database exports) and access to existing digital archive resources.
However, our offices in Gressenhall are now closed. This means that our physical resources, including the HER paper and photographic archives, the Norfolk Air Photo Library, and the HES Library, are inaccessible for the duration. We will endeavour to process requests for physical material once measures have been relaxed and it is safe to return to our premises.

Please note that selected categories of information are excluded from this online resource and therefore this website is not suitable for use in the planning process or academic research. However researchers can contact the Norfolk Historic Environment Record directly to request a bespoke search of the full dataset.
