Summary

A scattered hoard of Late Bronze Age metalwork was found on a new housing estate at Sir Williams Close between 1968 and 1969. The hoard included socketed spearheads, a barbed spearhead fragment, socketed and facetted axes, a socketed hammer and fragments of a flanged disc and sword and rapier blades.

Full description

1968/69.
Hoard of Late Bronze Age metalwork from gardens of new housing estate in Sir Williams Close.
1) two spearheads (S2), three socketed axes (S3, S4 and S5), one flanged disc broken (10 Sir Williams Close).
2) one socketed axe (S6), and two fragments (S7 ). (31 Sir Williams Close).
3) seven socketed axes and fragments (S8, S9, S10 and S11) one ?rapier fragment, one spearhead fragment, one socketed hammer, one fragment bronze ingot (S12). (10 Sir Williams Close).
4) two sword fragments (S13 and S14), one ?rapier fragment, one fragment bronze ingot (S15) (10 Sir Williams Close).
5) one socketed axe (S16).
Items under 1) above NCM 915.968 2) 30.969. Remainder on loan L.1971.7 excluding item 25.399.971.

1969. Excavation.
Excavation on site of hoard in 1969 found no more bronzes but prehistoric sherd (T. H. Mck. Clough (NCM) with University of East Anglia Archaeology Society).
Material from excavation now in Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1969.543).

The prehistoric sherd is illustrated in (S17) where it is identified as being from a later Bronze Age bowl.
