Name:Roman and Early Saxon inhumations, multi-period finds

Summary

Inhumations were found at this site in the early 20th century, along with what were identified as sherds of Iron Age, Roman and Early Saxon pottery. Metal-detecting between 2007 and 2012 recovered Neolithic worked flint including a scraper; Roman, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins and Iron Age/Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include Late Bronze Age copper alloy awls; a Late Iron Age brooch; Roman brooches, bracelet fragments and a finger-ring; Early Saxon dress accessories and brooches; Early/Middle Saxon dress accessories; a Middle Saxon pin; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; medieval dress accessories, a nail and a spring mechanism from a cylindrical or barrel padlock and a post-medieval hooked tag.

1912.
Human remains to south west. Five skeletons in Decoy Close with Roman and other wares, one fragment of Samian.
All crouched, see (S1).
One flint flake with burials.

Skeleton found in Decoy Piece with two sherds of Early Saxon pottery found near them (one of these is a stamped pot).

A. Gregory could find only one Iron Age sherd in NCM, body sherd in laminated fabric with small rounded quartz grit.
