Name:	Multi-period finds and possible Roman kiln

Summary

In 1970 a broken worked flint, possibly an adze or sickle blade, was recovered from the ground surface and fieldwalking in 1982 and 1987 found a large concentration of Roman pottery sherds (Nar Valley Ware) and medieval pottery sherds and tiles. Later metal-detecting in 2014 recovered a quantity of Roman coins; the occassional Late Iron Age, Late Saxon and medieval coins; medieval jettons and Roman and medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman plate brooch and a medieval tripod ewer leg.
The concentration of Roman pottery sherds may relate to a pottery kiln on this site or to the contemporary kilns in the area (see NHER 4282).

2 December 1982.
Large concentration of Roman sherds, probably debris from kilns on site NHER 4282. Densest concentration at 6845 0948, but material spreads from south end of field for nearly 200m north, and eastwards for about 40m except where appears to be tongue of material around north slopes of natural spur to 6858 0953. This may simply be spread but possibility of other kilns cannot be ruled out.
Also small scatter of flints including a scraper at 6844 0943. (Beaker - F. Healy (NAU))

19 October 1987. Rewalking showed this spread is only eastern end of large spread containing sites NHER 4282 and 4255 (contexts 7-8).
Nar valley sherds.
Total area of whole: 420m (northeast-southwest) x 170m (northwest-southeast) at 9.2m (30ft) OD.
