Full description
Before 26 February 2001. Metal detecting.
Early post medieval gilded silver pendant: circular with integral suspension loop engaged with tiny (5mm diameter) silver ring. A bearded bust in relief set within a central circular field, surrounded by a slightly raised rim. Outside this are twenty filigree circles with pellets in the centres. Another slightly raised rim runs around the perimeter. The central sunken field is damaged and cracked. Considerable wear on the suspension loop and ring.
Diameter 20mm. Weight 1.62g.
This object was submitted as potential Treasure and subsequently acquited by the British Museum (2002,0303.1). It was identified by D. Gaimster (British Museum) as an early 16th-century devotional badge depicting the head of St John the Baptist. The decapitated head of John the Baptist belonged to the late medieval cult of relics.
