Name:Roman metal working site and possible Roman settlement

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting have revealed a Roman metal working site and the site of a possible Roman settlement. Roman artefacts discovered include metal working debris, pottery sherds, brooches, over sixty coins, tweezers and a quern. Other finds include an Iron Age sword pommel and pieces of Iron Age pottery.

Full description

1965. Found on surface of field.
Iron working/smelting site discovered. 3rd century AD pottery, fragments of roofing tile, puddingstone quern.
(S1).
Area of smelting debris measured 15m by 7.5m (50 by 25 feet). Including briquetage, bloom, colour coated ware.
