Record Details

NHER Number:3521
Type of record:Monument
Name:Bronze Age round barrow

A Bronze Age round barrow survives as an earthwork alongside the Peddar's Way at this location. It lies partly within a field and partly outside. The part within the field is lower than that outside, as a result of ploughing. A Neolithic flint flake, along with Beaker and Roman pottery sherds, have been found on and near the barrow.

A. J. Lawson (NAU) 7 February 1974.

March 1984.
This is definitely a barrow. Half ploughed in field, half covered in trees.

Barrow disturbed by pipeline without archaeological supervision.
E. Rose (NLA) 11 February 1992

Visible as low mound, much spread in field, with some rabbit disturbance. Western half of barrow masked by bracken, forming east edge of Peddars Way.

March 1991.
Standing to 1.5m high by Peddars Way, less in field. Portion of barrow in field appears to be under set aside.
See (S1) in file.
H. Paterson (A&E) March 1991

April 1998.
Section of barrow on footpath under thick grass and bracken. Section in field now mostly under a 2m grass field margin, this protecting from further plough damage.
