Summary
Metal detecting recovered an important example of a Roman Colchester two piece brooch dated to the 1st century AD. This brooch is important because it is transitional between the earlier one piece and later two piece brooches.

Full description
15 August 1998. Metal detecting find.
An interesting Colchester two piece brooch showing how type developed from one piece brooches. Wings straight in section and undecorated. In centre of reverse a pieced lug for (missing) axis bar. In front, on top of bow, a forward facing hook (as in one piece) has been hammered down to form a hole for the spring chord. This, together with half the spring, survives. Bow is narrow and tall in section, undecorated and smoothly curving to a pointed foot. This has catchplate decorated with rocker arm on the concave face as if object was designed to be seen side on. 1st century.
