November 1997. Earthwork Survey.
Survey of earthworks on Geldeston Marshes, south of Dairy Farm.
Site extended to west to encompass 8.9 hectares, comprising series of medieval enclosures with some building platforms on a terrace overlooking the Waveney marshes and partly abutting a common edge.

Earthworks of medieval to post medieval enclosures and platforms are visible on aerial photographs (S1, S6-S8). The central grid reference for these earthworks has been amended from TM 3810 9135 to TM 3788 9142. A group of rectilinear enclosure earthworks are present on a roughly west to east axis to the south of Dairy Farm at Ellingham. These earthworks have previously been surveyed on the ground and detailed discussion of their form can be found in (S5). The western part of the group of earthworks comprises of a series of roughly north to south aligned fields. These measure 126m long by 30m wide. Two rectangular enclosures containing possible building platforms are present at the southern end of two of these fields. The largest of these has dimensions of 42m by 38m. The central part of this group of earthworks contains a complex cluster of small rectilinear enclosures. The smallest of these have internal dimensions of 12m by 27m. The eastern part of the group contains earthworks of four adjoining rectilinear enclosures. These are present on a roughly west to east axis and range in size from 23m by 27m to 26m by 48m. To their north are rectilinear fields that are defined by narrower ditches. These enclosures are located on the edge of the terrace of the River Waveney and are likely to relate to medieval to post medieval settlement and agricultural activity. Their southern limit marked the extent of common land called Ellingham Marsh on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S9). Similar enclosures are present in Geldeston parish 1.5km to the east (NHER 32989).
