Name:Roman finds scatter and medieval and post medieval finds

Summary

A dense scatter of Roman pottery, tile and brick was recovered from this site during a watching brief carried out by the Norfolk Archaeological Unit in 1992 in advance of the construction of a new gas pipeline. A Roman brooch was also found, as well as medieval and post medieval pottery and building materials.

Full description

May-August 1992. Fieldwalking and Metal-Detecting Survey and Watching Brief.
Fieldwork carried out along route of Yelverton to East Carleton Gas Pipeline (Survey Blocks 130-136).
Finds recovered during initial survey include:
4 prehistoric flint flakes.
284 Roman pottery sherds, 2 brick/tile fragments and 1 brooch (Dolphin type).
12 medieval brick/tile fragments and glass.
2 post-medieval pottery sherds, 22 brick/tile fragments and glass
Undatable smilthing and smelting slag and possible stone quern.
No archaeologically significant features or deposits identified during subsequent Watching Brief undertaken during topsoil stripping and excavation of pipe trench.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2). It should be noted that some of the finds listed above are only recorded in the site archive. There are also minor discrepancies between the information given in (S1) and that which was initially supplied following the completion of the fieldwork.
The finds have been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1995.75).
