Summary

This is the site of a Roman settlement, which continues into NHER 18849. Metal-detecting between 1989 and 2020 recovered Iron Age, Late Iron Age, Roman, and medieval pottery sherds, Roman tile, tegulae, tesserae, flue tile, and roof tile; Late Iron Age/Roman coins of Roman issue and Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; as well as undated, Late Bronze Age, Middle Iron Age, Early Iron Age/Roman and Early Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated casting waste, ingot, ring and possible Bronze Age unidentified object; a Late Bronze Age scabbard chape and socketed axehead; a Middle Iron Age brooch; Early Iron Age/Roman brooch; Roman brooches, finger rings, vessel fragments, a bead, nail cleaner, unidentified object, bracelet, ferrule, casting waste, furniture fitting, harness mount, ring, steelyard weight, and stud; an Early Saxon hanger; a Middle Saxon to medieval spindle whorl; a Late Saxon/medieval bridle bit cheek piece; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval barrel padlock, harness pendant, and figurine; medieval/post-medieval cloth seals, a chafing dish fragment and sword belt; and post-medieval rowel spurs, a mount, and a sword belt.

Full description

1989. Strip about 30 metres wide along east edge of field, with little or nothing to west; edge of Roman site NHER 18849. [1].
51 Roman coins, see list in file.
4 Roman coarseware sherds.
One tegula fragment and one Roman tile fragment.
Upper part of Hod Hill brooch. Prominent centred rib on ow, apparently undecorated. 43 to 70 AD.
T shaped brooch, head and upper bow only; spring missing. Double perforated lug; wide bow with slight marginal mouldings. Late 1st to mid 2nd century AD.
Bracelet fragment. Multiple unit type? Zone of diagonal transverse grooves next to fragment of eye? Terminal. 4th century. Terminal of Roman snake's head bracelet.
