Summary
Metal-detecting and fieldwalking during 1986-2006 recovered a large number of objects. Finds included Mesolithic, Neolithic and undatable prehistoric worked flints; Beaker, ?Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon and medieval pottery sherds; Roman, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval jettons and a number of other metal objects including an Early Saxon silver ring and brooch.

Full description
Hargate, northwest angle of road junction north of Carleton Fen
December 1986. Fieldwalking.
Undatable prehistoric worked flints including small crude axe made into pick, flakes (some retouched) and 1 burnt flake.
?Mesolithic flints flakes.
1 Early Saxon small long brooch. See (S1).
1 medieval/post-medieval coin.

1 ?Iron Age pottery sherd.
10 Iron Age/Early Saxon pottery sherds (sand-tempered).
1 Roman coin and 1 pottery sherd (Late Roman shell-tempered ware).
3 medieval pottery sherds (medieval unglazed).
1 medieval/post-medieval decorated buckle. Identified by S. Margeson (NCM).

September 1987. Excavation.
Excavation made in centre of field, 4ft square, to below ploughsoil (not more than 2-3 inches deep). Finds recovered included:
Prehistoric 'pot boilers'.
1 Mesolithic patinated flint flake.
2 ?Neolithic shattered cores and 1 retouched flake.
1 ?Roman brick fragment.
Early Saxon pottery sherds.
Flints identified by J. J. Wymer (NAU) and other finds (except for the brick fragment) identified by T. Gregory (NAU) and A. Rogerson (NAU). Information from (S2). These discoveries were reported in (S3). The finds themselves were subsequently given to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1999.323.8.6.2).
