Summary
This is the site of a Late Saxon settlement, which developed in the area around St Mary's Church (NHER 7297) in the 9th and 10th centuries. The settlement site continues under NHER 23084. Field walking recovered prehistoric flints, and pottery dating from the Late Saxon and medieval periods.

July 1986. Field L185.
Field walking, poor conditions, slightly weathered, maize 20cm high.
Considerable number of Thetford type sherds.
Some medieval sherds including Grimston.
Flints, copper alloy sheet.

This site, and site NHER 23084, are recorded as LS2 in (S2). A small nucleated settlement grew up in the area around Little Fransham church in the 9th and 10th centuries, but was abandoned by 1100, as settlement gradually shifted towards the edges of the commons.
