Summary
This is the site of a Late Saxon settlement, which developed in the area around St Mary's Church (NHER 7297) in the 9th and 10th centuries. The settlement site continues under NHER 23085. Field walking recovered prehistoric flints, and pottery dating from the Middle Saxon to the post medieval periods.

Full description
July 1986. Field L71. Field walking, poor conditions in maize 20cm high; later a little more weathered.
Flints.
Thetford and Ipswich ware.
Medieval sherds including Grimston.
Post medieval sherds.

2 base sherds from context 6 (found July 1986) re-examined.
One is Ipswich, the other possibly Middle Saxon.

This site, and site NHER 23085, are recorded as LS2 in (S2). A small nucleated settlement grew up in the area around Little Fransham church in the 9th and 10th centuries, but was abandoned by 1100, as settlement gradually shifted towards the edges of the commons.
