Summary
Fieldwalking recovered prehistoric worked flints and fragments of Roman, Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery. The large number of Roman pottery pieces found in one area and the presence of Roman tile suggests this might have been the location of Roman settlement.

Full description
1985 and March 1986. Hales Survey, Heckingham site 17.
Winter cereal, good conditions. Divided into two contexts, west and east halves of field. 'Roman zone' occurs in
both, see (S1).
Context 1. Area A (west) centred at 3859 9900.
Four flint flakes, one small end scraper, one shatter piece. Identified by J.J. Wymer (NAU).
Roman: one colourcoated, two red slipped, three mortaria, two shell gritted, 140 greyware including bead and flanged bowls, one tegula.
Middle Saxon: one rim pimply Ipswich.
Medieval: thirty three early medieval and medieval unglazed. Four medieval glazed.
One late medieval/transitional.
One post medieval green glazed, five other post medieval sherds.
Context 2, area B (east) centred at 3866 9900.
One scraper, three flakes. Identified by J.J. Wymer (NAU).
Twelve Roman greyware.
One rim sandy Ipswich.
One Thetford type.
Eighteen medieval unglazed possibly including some Thetford type.
One medieval unglazed.
One undated oxidised.

Sites 17a/b and H43 are probably part of one site. This has been interpreted as an area of Roman settlement. It dates to the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD.
