Record Details

NHER Number:21441
Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman settlement and villa and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting in this field have recovered a large number of Roman finds including coins, pottery, building material and metalwork. A geophysical survey identified the presence of a corridor building, thought to be a Roman villa. The amount of material recovered from the site suggests this villa was surrounded by an area of Roman settlement. The scatter of Roman material extends into the fields to the south (NHER 36994). Other finds including a number of prehistoric flint and Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, Saxon, medieval and post medieval metal objects. Notable finds include a Late Bronze Age socketed axe fragment and an Early or Middle Saxon hanging bowl escutcheon in the form of a bird with folded wings.
