Name:Site of Roman settlement and multi-period finds


This is the site of a Roman settlement, which continues under NHER 20754. Roman coins, a Roman brooch, a Roman steelyard weight, fragments of Roman pottery and Roman tiles have been found on the site during field walking and metal detecting. Prehistoric flint flakes, and fragments of pottery dating from the Iron Age to the post medieval periods have also been found.

Full description

March 1983. Ordnance Survey field Great Fransham 287. Field walking, good conditions but dry soil.
Concentration in northwest quadrant.
Very large quantity Roman and medieval sherds.
Roman Nar Valley and medieval coarse not easily distinguishable. Also Roman Calcite ware, amphorae, mortaria, and ?tile.
Medieval including Grimston and imported.
Post medieval sherds.
Prehistoric worked flint.
