Name:Great Walsingham Roman temple site

Summary

Roman finds have been made at this site since the 1950s. Extensive metal detecting has recovered Roman coins, pottery, votive objects, brooches and building material. The enormous volume of finds of a religious nature indicate that this was a temple site. The site is part of a much larger Roman town (NHER 42850). Ritual objects include representations of the Roman god Mercury and satyrs and cupids probably relating to the god Bacchus. Pottery dating from the 2nd to the 4th century AD found on the site may relate to containers used for offerings of food and drink or ritual feasting. Over six thousand Roman coins, many perhaps gifts to the gods left at the temple, have also been recovered. In addition, prehistoric worked flints and metal objects dating from the Bronze Age right through to the post-medieval period have been recovered.

Extensive Roman site, part of a larger town NHER 42850. Includes concentration of finds indicative of Roman temple site (S1). Possible correct site for Sir Thomas Browne's Early Saxon cemetery.

This is very unlikely to be the site of Thomas Browne's excavated cemetery as the overwhelming majority of material from this site points to inhumation burial, whereas Browne refers to cremated remains.
