Summary
A prehistoric quartzite macehead was found here in 1969. The recorded description suggests that this may well have been what would now be classed a pebble macehead. This simple form of mace is not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.

Full description
1969. Stray Find.
Quartzite 'macehead' found on Shammer House Farm. Has hour-glass perforation and signs of hammering at ends. Length 11.3cms, width 9.2cms diameter of perforation: maximum 4.4cms, minimum 1.7cms.

From the description it is likely that this object is what would now be classed as a pebble mace. These objects are typically circular or sub-circular and are unworked apart from the central hour glass perforation. Maces of this type are not closely datable having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.
