NHER Number:18849
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1983 and 2014 recovered Roman and medieval pottery sherds; Roman building material, including tile, window glass, tesserae and nails; Iron Age, Roman and medieval coins; a post-medieval token and undated, Bronze Age to Early Saxon and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated casting waste, a ring and vessel fragments; a Bronze Age rapier blade fragment; a Middle/Late Bronze Age spearhead; Late Bronze Age socketed axehead and sword; a Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age awl; an Iron Age brooch; an Iron Age/Roman brooch, torc and unidentified object; a Late Iron Age/Roman brooch; Roman brooches, beads, dress accessories, harness fittings, a hair pin, bell, furniture fitting, mirror, weight, a very unusual harness pendant suspension mount and a rare miniature stand or stool, probably for ceremonial use; an Early Saxon brooch and spangle; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval finger ring, pot mend, harness hook and furniture fitting; a medieval/post-medieval weight and scabbard chape and a post-medieval cloth seal, weight and tap.
The large quantity of Roman pottery, Roman coins, building material and metalwork recovered suggests that this was the site of a Roman settlement.
