NHER Number:17335
Type of record:Monument
Name:Cropmarks of a medieval to early post medieval field system

Summary

Cropmarks of linear ditches and rectilinear enclosures of a probable medieval to early post medieval field system are visible on aerial photographs. They are located on the Ellingham and Kirby Cane parish boundary. Faden's 1797 Map of Norfolk shows that they were located on the edge of ‘Ellingham, Kirby Cane and Geldestone Common’. Other related enclosure and field system cropmarks are present in the vicinity (NHER 45005-7).

Cropmarks of linear ditches and rectilinear enclosures of a probable medieval to early post medieval field system are visible on aerial photographs. The central grid reference for these cropmarks has been amended from TM 3660 9290 to TM 3665 9288. A group of rectilinear enclosure cropmarks are present with north to south and west northwest to east southeast boundary ditches. At least one complete enclosure or field is present in the centre of the group. It has a parallelogram shaped plan and measures 57m by 27m internally. It is flanked by incomplete fields of the same length to its west and east. Cutting across these fields are west to east aligned linear ditches. It is not completely clear whether or not they are contemporary with the fields. It is possible that two of these parallel ditches define a trackway of a different date to the field system. It is possible that these ditches continue further to the west (NHER 45006). The southern side of the fields is defined by a series of parallel west northwest to east southeast ditch cropmarks. These appear to partly continue the line of the Kirby Cane and Ellingham parish boundary to the east of the site. These ditches appear to include part of another possible trackway and further incomplete enclosures. Two roughly parallel linear ditch cropmarks are present on a west to east alignment where the parish boundary crosses the field. It is possible that these define a road that is shown along the parish boundary on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S2). The area to the south of the road and parish boundary is marked as ‘Ellingham, Kirby Cane and Geldestone Common’. Only one ditch cropmark is present to the south of the parish boundary in this area. It lies on a northwest to southeast alignment and is probably related to a group of enclosure cropmarks further to the southeast (NHER 45005).
