Full description

Cage and pound.

7 June 1979. Field Observation.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
Small flint and brick shed, 18th century?
Strong wooden iron bound door on west with small iron barred window above.
No other windows.
Pound on east, walls now cut down to make a public garden.
Name Pound Lane east of town suggests it was formerly on that side, unless there were two or the road names have changed.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Cage. Early to mid 19th century. Flint with brick dressings, red pantiled roof. Single storey, rectangular on plan. West gable has boarded door with metal hinges and in situ closing bar with padlock. Brick quoins to door and angles. Included for historical interest."

This small structure bears a sign with the following text: "This building, the cage, was formerly the local lock-up. The surrounding area, the pound, was used to enclosure stray animals".
