Name:Late Bronze and Early Iron Age settlement

Summary

Evaluation in advance of the building of Aylsham bypass noted the presence of many pits containing Iron Age and Bronze Age pottery after the topsoil has been stripped. Roman and medieval pottery was also recovered. These extensive features indicate a Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age settlement over 500m in length. These may be related to nearby cropmarks NHER 12772.

Full description

June to July 1979. Along line of Aylsham bypass through three fields. Contexts 1 to 47.
Seen on stripped surface, east and west limits of site not known.
Large number of features, mainly pits, mostly containing Iron Age pottery. A few with Bronze Age, Roman or medieval.
