Summary

This 19th century brick steam mill has been converted into a house. Faden's map of 1797 shows a windmill on the site. By 1807 there were two windmills on the site, one of which burnt down in 1908.

Full description

November 1976. Carleton Rode Mills on Ordnance Survey map; northernmost of two buildings.
19th century brick steam mill converted to dwelling house.
Tapering square chimney survives though top is damaged.
Owners say that originally a wind mill stood here but was burnt down, and the machinery was buried on the spot and is still there. Mill stones in garden.

Wind mill marked on (S1) - in fact there were two post mills by 1807; the last of these burnt down 1908 according to informant [1].

The first mention of the steam mill in documents is in Kelly's directory in 1904 (S3) where it is used in conjunction with the windmills.
