Record Details

NHER Number:11776
Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman or medieval field system and multi-period finds

Summary

Cropmarks of linear and rectangular features can be seen on aerial photographs taken in the 1970s. These have been interpreted as Roman field system and a canal or medieval ridge furrow.
Stray finds of Late Saxon pottery sherds were made here in 1951, while fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1987 and 2014 recovered Iron Age, Roman, Late Saxon, Late Saxon/medieval, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval token and undated, Late Iron Age, Roman and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an undated copper alloy ring; a Late Iron Age brooch; a Roman stud, bracelet terminal and military harness pendant and mount; a Late Saxon/medieval strap-end and finger ring; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval seal matrices, a lead weight, brooch, brooch pin and harness mount and pendant; a medieval/post-medieval lead weight and possible pendant loop from a purse frame and a post-medieval finger ring.
