Full description

Pre 1975. Fieldwalking.
Fieldwalking by [1] in Finder's Field OH 204. This finder assigned unique identifiers to each of the many fields that he examined. In many instances these were the old O.S field numbers prefixed with a parish code. It should be noted that this was not always the case, although according to (S1) this was the case in this instance (this field being old O.S field 204). Finds identified by T. Gregory (NAU) included:
Roman pottery sherds (Late Roman coarse wares).
1 ?Early Saxon pottery sherd.
1 Middle Saxon Ipswich ware pottery sherd.
According to (S2) the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology also holds a single Mesolithic flake/blade that was found by this finder in Field 204. This is confirmed as a blade in (S3).
A. Gregory (NAU) 12 June 1975. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 18 December 2013.

Field checked on maps by E. Rose (NAU).

It appears that this field was the site of at least one post-medieval brick kiln. See NHER 1281 for further details of the structure remains identified and a discussion of the documentary evidence. A potentially related area of reddish soil has also been identified on aerial photographs of this field; see NHER 26726.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 December 2013.
