Summary

When 'Weybourne Pit' west of Middle Belt was excavated in 1956, iron conglomerate was found at the bottom. A number of broken flint and crude hammer stones were also noted and would have been used for breaking up the iron ore for extraction.

Full description

August to September 1956.
'Weybourne Pit' west of Middle Belt excavated; iron conglomerate found at bottom.
Cut trench 1.2m (4 feet) wide found considerable traces of broken flint and crude hammer stones used for breaking up iron ore in layer about 45cm (1 foot 6 inches) thick and 30cm (1 foot) below surface.
