Record Details

NHER Number:42139
Type of record:Monument
Name:Earthworks of post medieval ridge and furrow

Summary

Earthworks of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow and drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs. It is possible that these date to the period of the Naploeonic Wars (1793-1815). New areas of land, including on the marshes, were converted to arable at that time as a result of high grain prices. The earthworks have been levelled and the field was in arable cultivation by 1988.

Full description

November 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of a possible post medieval narrow ridge and furrow and drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These earthworks are centred on TG 4751 1032. The field in which they are located is divided into three areas by two ditches in a T-shaped arrangement. The western part of the field comprises two areas measuring 108m by 88m and 112m by 110m. The ridge and furrow in the western area lies on a north to south alignment and is spaced approximately 3m apart. Information from [1] suggests that these are the remains of narrow ridge and furrow. It is possible that they date to the period of the Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) when grain prices were high and areas of the marshland were taken into arable cultivation (S3). The field was in arable cultivation by 1988 (S2) although the drainage ditches were visible as cropmarks. The western part of the field has subsequently been built over.
