Full description
June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of possible medieval to post medieval building or garden platforms and ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These earthworks are centred on TG 5011 1447. Three adjacent rectilinear earthwork platforms form a rectangular block measuring 16.5m west to east by 12m north to south. The largest platform measures 11m by 7m and occupies the western side of the block. Measuring. The eastern part comprises of two smaller platforms, which measure 9m by 7m and 9.5m by 4m respectively. An earthwork ditch, up to 2m wide, extends along the north and west sides of the block of platforms. Further narrower ditches separate the platforms and also extend along the south side of the block. The east side of the block is obscured by trees and it is not clear whether it was also marked by a ditch. These platforms lie in the grounds of Ormesby Old Hall (NHER 8695), a 17th century or earlier house. They are located to the east of the Hall itself between the former stable block (now a house) and immediately to the north of Yarmouth Road. It is possible that these platforms supported small buildings or structures of medieval or post medieval date. Alternatively the platforms may relate to a former garden feature, although this area does not appear to have been part of the formal or kitchen gardens associated with the Hall. No associated features are shown at this location on the tithe map (S2) or later maps. A site visit by E.Rose in April 2005 confirmed that this area has been landscaped and the earthworks are no longer present.
