Full description

October 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A type 20 World War Two pillbox is visible on aerial photographs situated on the promenade inbetween Cromer Pier and the Gangway to the east (S1-3). The pillbox is located within one of the semi-circular promontories that project seaward from the promenade at TG 2203 4227. The pillbox was built inbetween October 1940 (S4) and August 1941 (S1-3) and has been demolished by June 1946 (S5). Several other pillboxes were positioned along the promenade, with an additional two pillboxes and scaffolding to the east (NHER 32576, 38832-3) and a group of three pillboxes and gun emplacements to the west on the end of the Pier (NHER 38850-1).

The pillbox is 5m square with a blast wall to the south, clearly visible on an oblique aerial photograph from 1941 (S6). This shape would indicate that it is a type 20 pillbox.
S. Massey (NMP), 13 October 2004.
