Name:Roman canal and finds, Woodhouse Farm

Summary

Fragments of Roman pottery and pieces of burnt daub were found at this site in the 1930s. Fieldwalking in the 1980s as part of the Fenland Survey recovered more Roman pottery. A section of the Roman canal that ran alongside the Fen Causeway Roman road runs east to west across the site.

Full description

1933.
Sherds in profusion to east and west of house. Samian sherds (F.69) and much burnt daub from 200 yards east of farm buildings.
Note by R.R. Clarke (NCM) who also made an identical note but ascribed information to St. Joseph.

1987. Fenland fieldwalking.
Some of the Roman sherds from NHER 16600 context 2 may come from north edge of this site east of farm. Also, the
postulated Roman canal runs east to west forming the section of this site east of the farmhouse. A soilmark of unknown date projects into this site from the main complex in NHER 16600.
