Record Details

NHER Number:26899
Type of record:Monument
Name:Earthworks of post medieval sea defences

Summary

A narrow ditch and two small sections of bank are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. The earthworks seem to have been part of an earlier sea defence/land reclamation attempt and may originally have been a more substantial feature joining together NHER 26712 and 26763, to create a continuous barrier.

Full description

January 2001. NMP.
The fragmentary remains of a narrow ditch and two small sections of bank can be seen as earthworks at TF 7347 4428 - TF 7376 4448 on 1945 APs (S1). The feature is c. 350m long. It seems to be part of an earlier sea defence/land reclamation attempt and may originally have been a more substantial feature joining together NHER 26712 and 26763, to create a continuous barrier. However the evidence is quite slight. If it is part of a larger feature, then it is probably post medieval in date. Traces of the features can also be seen on 1952 APs (S2).
A. Hunt (NMP), 25 January 2001.
